Jim Kaighin Wins The Mid-Winter Championship

Once again the Marco Mid-Winters Championship Regatta in Marco Island, FL did not disappoint the skippers as one of the finest RC Laser events ended today in blustery conditions and sub-70-degree temperatures.

A storm front come through early Sunday causing a small postponment but PRO, Dave Brawner and his RC team created a terrific windward leeward 2-lap course and the day was early D/C sails and melded into mostly C and some B sails for the final 4 races. The winds remained in the 18-20’s all day Sunday with some blasts in the 30 knot range periodically making for some exciting skippering and drew large spectator crowds to watch the excitement. We completed 14 races in 43 heats over the 2 and a half day.

The 9th annual Marco Island RC Laser Mid-Winter Championship belongs to Jim Kaighin, from the Bahamas, who grabbed his third championship in a come-from-behind day to defeat 32 skippers.

Smart sailing and clean starts paved the way for Jim as he defeated previous leader, Rocky Cale, from Marco Island, and former champion, Hank  Buchanan, from New York City to win a very close series.

In fourth place was Jim’s brother, Mike Kaighin (Sarasota, FL), who has not sailed an RC boat since the Marco Midwinters in 2010. In fifth was Don Barker from Chestertown, MD, while Miles Loesel from Pompano Beach and Chuck Weaver from Marco’s fleet rounded out the top seven.

Beautiful engraved glass bowls were presented to the top seven finishers by Commodore George Domenech, Race Director, Rocky Cale, and Bryan Milk, Director of Parks and Recreation for Marco Island.

The Marco Eagle wrote up a nice article on the event.
