Top Geezer Steve Lang wins his 4th Geezer Gatta!

Geezer (ge-zer) slang, Not Young, Not Dead, Somewhere In Between.

Twenty Seven of these RC sailing geezers descended on Mount Juliet, TN for one of the best RC regattas in the country. Mt Juliet is just a few miles east of Nashville with the actual regatta sailed at Dell Webb’s Lake Providence community.

The Lake Providence RC Club handles all the arrangements for this unique regatta. They handle home stay for visiting skippers, meals for the group consisting of two dinners, two lunches and a light breakfast each morning, and two days of great racing with a slick scoring system that is shown on a large flat screen TV at the sailing site. The scoring is computed after each race and shows individual as well as team placement.

Saturday’s sailing started with B sails until after lunch when the wind piped in at 16 to 20. The original forecast was for poor weather conditions most of the day. The weatherman was wrong! Along with the stiff breeze the sun was out the entire day. The smooth water made great planing conditions during the afternoon races.

Sunday the weather was much different than Saturday. The boats used both A and B sails, switching back and forth during the day.

After two days of sailing 48 heats the top two skippers were only separated by one point. Steve Lang, former Lake Providence resident, won the regatta over Ron Stephanz who has sailed in this regatta since it’s inception. Newcomers Dave Branning placed third, Bill Coppage fourth, with Jerry Fernald placing fifth.
