2016 RC Laser Region 3 Championship Regatta
The Albemarle Regatta was sailed June 25-26 in near-ideal conditions at one of the most beautiful and accommodating venues imaginable for model yacht racing. Edenton Harbor on the Chowan River offers a wide range of options for setting a course. Not only that, the food, ambiance and company was outstanding; everyone went home grinning. The atmosphere was relaxed. If you weren’t there, kick yourself – and make sure you come next time a regatta is held there.
Raleigh NC-based Triangle Model Yacht Club organized the regatta featuring RC Lasers on Saturday. This was the Region 3 Championship Regatta. Saturday’s Laser sailing was done mostly under A sails with an occasional B rig appearance. Winds were consistently out of the NE with an oscillation that rewarded skippers who stayed on top of the shifts. Courses were long, limited only by eyesight, and 14 races were completed with two throw outs. Don Barker of Chestertown, MD sailed consistently well to top the 11-boat fleet with 7 bullets and 2 seconds, having arrived from MD with Roger Baldwin on Roger’s handsome traditional Wasque motor yacht. Dave Branning came second overall, followed by Michael Roberson. The last place finisher received a copy of Buddy Melges’ Sailing Smart book.
Special thanks to the Edenton Yacht Club for recruiting members to supply and man a chase boat both days. I think I can speak for all the entrants in expressing the greatest appreciation to the Edenton Chamber of Commerce, the Edenton-Chowan County Tourism Development Authority and the Penelope Barker House for their exceptional hospitality. Can’t wait to get back there.
