Jamey Betz takes Tilghman Doubleheader RC Laser Regatta

With a nice SE breeze to start the day, ten RC Lasers, including two from North Carolina, tightly raced thirteen races on Saturday, April 28th. For the first race, two B sails and eight A sails were deployed, and the B sails dominated. There was a mad dash back to the dock where the whole fleet now sported B sails until the lunch break. At the break, Jim Flach and Tom Rummage led the scoring at the top. There must have been something in the lunch (and a building breeze) that gave birthday boy, Jamey Betz, a boost because, as we all went to C sails, he turned on the after burners. Jamey proceeded to reel off five firsts, two seconds and a third to end the day on top by a comfortable margin. West Jersey’s Jim Flach wound up second on a tiebreaker over Oxford’s Roger Vaughan in third. In all we sailed 13 races with two throw-outs.

Oxford skippers Bob Roe and Harry Henkel, who also raced, made all the buoy deployments perfect while Elaine Hepkin delivered a relaxed lunch break in the Tilghman On Chesapeake Yacht Club along with Happy Birthday carrot cake cupcakes for Jamey Betz. Professional Race Director, Skip Hall, did all a RD could do to make the line calls, the finishes and healthy two lap courses fair and competitive. It was a perfect day all around.
