2025 So Jersey RC Laser Regatta
The ten-boat attendance was quite the unexpected small turnout but we mastered the frustrating wind, enjoyed the friendships and no one left hungry. All ten gentlemen who did show up brought their chipper fun personalities and made this a successful day all around. The forecast was 4-7mph out of the north-north-east and, as usual we struggled to get to four mph periodically during the day. Occasionally, we waited for the mile-away darker water to gather itself off shore and show up 3 minutes later to start the clock. Fortunately, the buoy configuration, set in the morning by a certified buoy committee, worked for the whole day’s 13 two-lap races without complaints (within earshot).
Visiting Region 1 Director, Glenn Chalder, the only non-region two skipper, came with a purpose and proceeded to drop a 1,1,1,3,3,1 opening seven races on the fleet. Glenn was sailing bow-down, always maximizing speed over pointing too high. He had an eleven-point lead over our 2025 Liberty RC Laser League leader, Frank Scalisi. Frank, at this point, and his brother, Paul, right on Frank’s heals three points back with Danny Vought six back
of Frank.
Apparently, the lunch break, and Elaine’s cookies, inspired Frank. The afternoon’s six races belonged to him as he nibbled away at Glenn’s lead to keep it interesting. In the end Glenn, always staying consistently close, won by five points and punctuated that with a bullet in the final race. The best part of this regatta for Elaine (scorekeeper and hostess) and me was the jovial bantering from the Scalisi brothers+ Danny Vought team from Staten Island, Monmouth, and Matawan, who came in the same car. Play by play jabs and always with a positive “make the best of what you got” attitude as the wind and slight current messed with the fleet.
• Thanks to Mike McGuckin who rose early and arrived in his Aquasport across Egg Harbor Bay from his home in Ocean City to set the marks.
• Thanks to John Parker (club buoys) & Cape May Ray who brought more buoys, coolers of sodas, water, and a serving table.
• Thanks to Frank Scalisi who conveniently brought his custom very cool countdown timer saving the day when ours failed to respond at the outset.
