Rob Seidelmann Wins 2013 Leftover Bowl
The 2013 edition of the Leftover Bowl was a great success. On Saturday, two days after Thanksgiving, fifteen skippers came from the in-laws or grandma’s house to enjoy the slightly cool breezes and mid 30’s temps to race in this annual holiday event. We all donned layers added the gloves and ski hats, and fleet raced 12 races with two throwouts. It was a great holiday weekend break and a fitting season ending regatta hosted by the West Jersey RC Laser Fleet on the Cooper River in Collingswood, NJ.
PRO, Jim Greenfield and his jack of all trades assistant, John MacCausland, ran the show and laid out a great windward leeward course with three choices of windward marks. The shifting easterly made us use all three during the course of the day. The morning B-Sail winds gave us some hot racing as Jamey Betz led Rob Seidelmann at the break by one point with Dave Branning nine points back in third. David Brawner, current EC12 National Champion and AMYA President, accumulated a plethora of potential throw outs and was 25 points out of first. He did end the morning with a bullet. A forecast of what was to come?
After the break the gloves came off and the easterly lost some of its punch. The A-Sails were deployed and Rob Seidelmann applied some pressure on Jamey Betz to grab the regatta by three points. Both sailed very consistently all day. Combined, they won eight of the 12 races sailed. The lunch must have agreed with Mr. Brawner as he won the afternoon (three firsts and a 2nd in that run) to reach third place nine points behind Jamey. Branning did not fare as well with the A sail and had an up and down afternoon to fall to 4th for the regatta. Nick Mortgu stayed in the top half of the fleet in every race and finished 5th overall.
Thanks to Jim Flach, Fleet Captain of the West Jersey RC Laser Fleet, and his team for hosting this event and to Jim Greenfield and “Johnny Mac” for braving the cold to run the show. It was an honor to have John MacCausland helping us as he is the 2013 STAR CLASS WORLD CHAMPION (That’s the big boys Star). An additional tip of the hat to Bill Ewing, Harry Mote and Skip Hall who took a break from EC12 racing to give an RC Laser a try. Hope they come back again in the future.
