2019 Alamo Classic RC Laser Region 5 Championship
The week prior to this Regional Championship was plagued with rain with percentages dropping everyday leading up to the weekend, so the decision was to go for it and have a two-day Regional Championship. With even special quest of top R5 skippers Chris Macaluso and Mark Cooper borrowing boats brings this event to another level. It was decided at skippers meeting to run the first day as a one-fleet/13 boat start for the full day with the scores on Saturday night being tabulated to determine our Gold and Silver Fleet for Sunday. With winds blowing 7-12mph, it was the decision by skippers to either stay powered up with the A-rig or go with your B-rig to stay in control. At the end of the day it seems that control will always win out over too much power. With 10 races on Saturday with multiple rig changes Al Ross, from Louisiana, came out on top and started his Sunday with only a 4 point lead over local Eric Gregory. Chris Macaluso was struggling and not able to repeat his success of the previous Corpus Christi regatta months earlier. Our usual Mexican dinner get together Saturday evening was attended my almost all skippers, so the trash talk was getting deep, as usual! Sunday morning brought another beautiful May Texas morning at Woodlawn. As the Gold/Silver Fleet was announced it found that once again the cream rose to the top with Mark Cooper just making the cut for the Finals Day! With the split fleet now it was decided to start the Silver Fleet first with a one minute delay till the Gold fleet sequence would start their race. This worked out very well as each fleet had only their nearest competitor, in the scores, around them for their race. After another 10 races the day Regional 5 Championship was in the books. Scores below.
As many skippers know with any Woodlawn SC’s regatta, its always about the food and no one goes home hungry. This event was no exception! Thanks to Tony Seta and Ken Weeks for performing the Texas BBQ duties. And of course a WSC regatta would not be official without the Mexican Paletas Ice Creams after each meal. Our Race committee personnel were all WSC members that seem to always jump in at the right time to volunteer so the other WSC members can race. Check out all the names below of all of our Regatta Staff.
