2020 St. Patrick’s Oktoberfest Regatta
by Mark Daddino
Raritan Yacht Club was proud to host the 2020 St. Patrick’s Oktoberfest Regatta. Due to the COVID pandemic, our annual St. Patrick’s Day Regatta was canceled. St Patrick has been in quarantine since March and he was ready to have some fun! This year’s event drew in 10 skippers from the New Jersey area. I would like to thank all those who competed in our regatta and made it a fun day of racing! We had sunny skies and temperatures in the mid to upper 50’s with NW wind between 6 – 14 knots with gusts at 16+ knots.
Skippers competed in 20 races for the day, alternating between A and B sails. The course was windward-leeward with leeward gates. We utilized low-point scoring and had 1 throw out. Participants always practiced social distancing. The RYC Galley prepared a grab and go hot meal for the regatta with hot corned beef sandwiches and minestrone soup along with homemade brownies for dessert.
Prizes were awarded to the top 7 skippers.
I would like to thank all those who competed in our regatta and made it a fun day of racing! Many thanks to our race committee Steve Fronapfel (PRO), Beth Hochberg (Scorekeeper); Past Commodore Mark Soldati (Rescue Boat), and Frank Scalisi (Host & Racecourse). Special thanks to Nick Mortgu for helping us organize our regatta!
