2024 Hangover Cup Report

by Michael Roberson

The Hangover Cup is an informal RC Laser Class New Year’s Day regatta hosted by the Triangle Model Yacht Club. The tradition has been to hold the RC Laser Class regatta at a different location every year. This year was no exception.

The 13th annual Hangover Cup Regatta was held at Lake Wilson in Wilson, NC, approximately one hour east of TMYC’s home lake near RDU airport.

Lake Wilson is the home of a long-time radio controlled sailing club, the Wilson Model Sailing Group. Several WMSG members regularly travel to TMYC events, so it was fun for the TMYC’ers to sail at their venue. Lake Wilson is a great spot for radio controlled sailing, with a terrific lake, docks, and heated bathrooms.

WMSG members set the course and ran the races. Thank you to, Will Newton, Dick Proseus, Jim Proseus, Glen Williford, and Steve Sidelinger for providing excellent race management!

The weather was chilly with steady light NW wind shifting North as the day went on. Most people sailed with A sails all day, a few tried a B sail and switched back to A. We had 10 boats and sailed 11 races with one throw out. Given that the wind was on shore, we started at the leeward end of the course, sailed two laps and finished down wind.

Martin Bowers and Skip Allen tied with 29 points. Martin won the tie breaker and the regatta with four first place finishes, verses Skip’s three. Congratulations! Chris Bock was third, Tom fourth, and Michael Roberson was fifth.
