2017 Hangover Cup

TMYC’s Hangover Cup for RC Lasers is traditionally sailed on New Year’s Day, but was postponed this year due to cold rain and a shortage of wind and parking. But all agreed the make-up day more than made up for it. The unusual weather forecast called for temps approaching 80 deg (on Feb 12!) with winds 12-17mph from the SW (our favorite direction on Lake Crabtree, but rarely experienced). The RC Laser skippers who came out for it were not disappointed! Winds were consistently a solid 12 with gusts to 19 or so all day long, and the temperature broke 80. Shorts, T-shirts and C sails were the uniform of the day.

In what could only be described as a barn-burner, 9 skippers completed 13 action-packed races; scorer Carmen Gaudreax (to whom we are eternally grateful) kept them hopping with rapid-fire starts. The races came thick and fast and the competition was closer than the points would indicate. There were no breakdowns or entanglements and the chase boat remained undisturbed. Skippers did a good job observing the rules.

We welcome new RC Laser owner Sam Bigelow, who gave a good account of himself in his first time racing an RC sailboat. No throwouts were allowed, and Michael Roberson of Raleigh came out on top with a well-earned win.

We missed the members who could not be with us today.
Conditions could not have been better for RC Lasers. This was one we will talk about all season.
